Road construction

Road construction is part of civil engineering, the field which deals with the design, construction and maintenance of roads. The Netherlands has an extensive road network, which comprises a large part of the Dutch infrastructure. The Dutch road network can be divided into different types of roads; national roads, provincial roads, local roads and water board roads. The Dutch road network consists mainly of asphalt roads. The Netherlands is a leader in sustainable developments regarding asphalt in road construction, which is why many road construction companies seek cooperation with each other.  

What is asphalt?

In road construction, asphalt is mainly used in the construction of roads. One speaks of an asphalt pavement if a road pavement consists of one or more layers of (asphalt) concrete. The Netherlands has national roads, provincial roads, local roads and water board roads, all of which use a different type of asphalt mixture design and asphalt construction. As a result of the (high) traffic intensity, keeping asphalt roads in good condition is essential. In addition, it is important that the asphalt road is designed to withstand varying weather conditions and heavy traffic loads such as trucks. A proper asphalt mixture design contributes to optimal asphalt pavement life. Asphalt can also be used on airports, parking roofs and bicycle paths, among others. 

Asphalt mixtures

An asphalt mixture is a composition of crushed stone, sand, filler and a binding agent (bitumen). Bitumen is an essential component in the making of asphalt; bitumen acts as a binding agent which holds the components of asphalt together. Depending on the user purpose and traffic intensity, the design of asphalt mixtures is taken into account. In addition, the design is tied to the location of the asphalt mixture in the asphalt structure. To ensure the durability of the type of road surface due to the changing climate, the right asphalt mixture design plays a major role. 

Bitumen

By removing lighter fractions from crude oil during the refining process, bitumen is obtained. Bitumen is the heaviest fraction from crude oil, which includes an important component in asphalt. In addition to acting as a binder for making asphalt, bitumen can be used in numerous ways in road construction. Bituminous binders and emulsions are an essential part, in building and maintaining asphalt roads. Depending on the type of application, bitumen can be modified in various ways to give the bituminous product the properties desired. Latexfalt produces modified bitumen which is used as a binder or emulsion in road construction, suitable for various maintenance methods. 

Bituminous products 

Latexfalt manufactures a range of bituminous products suitable for asphalt and construction maintenance measures. Depending on the type of application, the bitumen emulsions or binders have different properties. It is essential to determine which maintenance method is required and which type of bituminous product is most suitable for it. Each bituminous binder or emulsion has properties for treating road surfaces. Depending on the user purpose, our products are applicable in asphalt processing; waterproofing and crack inhibition measures, adhesion of asphalt layers and binding of asphalt mixtures. Also, our bitumen emulsions or binders can be used as surface treatment; wearing courses, application especially for dikes, small-scale treatments or emulsion asphalt concrete. In addition, as an emulsion they can be used for life-extending maintenance measures by means of preventive sealing. Finally, the bituminous products for asphalt repairs and asphalt rejuvenator for the production of high percentage recycled asphalt.

Sustainability

Sustainability and circularity are going to play an increasing role in decision making. Life-extending maintenance measures and surface treatments are preventive treatments to prevent damage patterns. Life extension maintenance involves maintaining road surfaces without replacing the asphalt of the roads. Sustainable and preventive maintenance are therefore becoming increasingly important in road construction. Through preventive sealing, the asphalt is rejuvenated using a bitumen emulsion with a rejuvenation component. In the context of circularity, increasing the percentage of recycled asphalt and the rejuvenation of recycled asphalt mixtures plays a major role.
